Whenever you go into a search engine such as Google, you are usually there looking for something, be that a product, a service or just some information. To find what you want you need to type in a query within the search box.

Google will then try to match websites to your search query. You are then looking at what is known as the search engine results page (SERP).

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the science behind getting those websites listed at the top of the search engine results. It not only helps you find the information you want quickly, it also helps the search engines know where to place a website to enable them to give a quick and accurate response to their customer, you the searcher. If the search engines do not give the correct results you would end up going to another search engine or not bothering all together, that is why the search engines set rules website owners need to follow to be seen.

Search engines do not want to lose you as they place advertisements within websites as well as within the search engine results, usually the first two of three listing and all listing on the right hand side of the screen have been paid for. Each time you click on one of these the website owner gets charged by the search engine.

People generally only look at the top few listings within the search engine results. This does not help a business if they are listed 10 pages deep as they need to sell their product or service to survive. This is why more and more websites have on page as well as off page SEO incorporated into them.

Website owners need to have their websites listed at the top of the organic section within the search engines. This is where websites get listed after the paid advertisements. Mainly because the top 3 organic listings get the most visitors, and each time someone clicks on the website the owner is not charged. They have simple put in the time to get listed or paid an SEO consultant to do the job for them, which is a fixed fee.

Thankfully SEO has moved on and now includes the customer experience as well as meeting the search engines rules and requirements to get listed at the top of the search results and ahead of the competition.
